Review- Lights Out (5/10)

This was a refreshing horror film. It had all the frights and terror a horror movie should have. All the jump scares were totally warranted, and the creature was absolutely terrifying. The actors were great, and you could really feel their terror in every situation. Their characters were very well written, and behaved intelligently as far as the rules of horror are concerned. But the one thing I did have  problem with was the plot.

Somehow, this film seems to combine the two worlds of The Babadook (2014) and Mama (2013) together into one film. The cast of characters are very similar to the family in Mama, and the personification of a mental disorder was clearly and expertly handled in The Babadook. All three films are great examples of horror, but while watching Light's Out I felt like I've seen it before. Like what was on screen wasn't anything I hadn't seen before.

The atmosphere was creepy, the characters well fleshed out, and the film definitely had it's fair share of thrills and frights. Could I have used more plot? Yes, I would have liked some more back story and a few more explanations. It's a difficult line to tread between spoon feeding your audience information and leaving the dots spaced out so far apart to draw a conclusion for yourself, but end up missing it entirely. All in all, a good watch and a roller coaster of fright for the whole family.
